IURTC Spring 2011 patent law externship

Hello:

Attached are details about the Spring 2011 IURTC patent law externship.  IURTC is IU's technology transfer operation, in charge of managing the university's patent portfolio.  Student externs will earn 3 law school credits (as a B710 "Independent Clinical Project").  IURTC expects to take on at least one extern in Spring 2011 on a trial basis, and we hope that this will lead to a yearly externship opportunity.
If you're interested, send a resume ASAP to Bill Brizzard (see details below and see the IPA e-mail attachment for Mr. Brizzard's contact info).

Professor Janis is working on several other patent law externship opportunities for next school year, so it's important that we get off to a good start with the IURTC externship this spring.

Have a great break!

Oct. 8 - Panel Discussion

This week’s event:
Panel Discussion - Friday, October 8, 2:20-3:20, Rm: 216
This Friday, October 8, the IPA will be hosting a panel discussion.  At 2:20-3:20, in Room 216, members of the law school's IP Advisory Board will conduct a special forum for IP students on IP careers.  Panelists will give short presentations on the most important things to do to prepare for a career in IP, and a question-and-answer session will follow.
This will be a great opportunity to meet the members of the IP Advisory Board.  In addition, it is very important that we convey to the IP Advisory Board the high level of student interest in and enthusiasm for IP study.  We are in the process of asking Board members to devote time and resources to the program, and to help us recruit other donors, so it is important to engage them, let them know we appreciate what they are doing, and urge them to do more.  Below is a list of the Board members who have been invited to participate in the panel discussion.
  • Christopher A. Bloom, K&L Gates (Chicago)
  • John P. Breen, Barnes & Thornburg (Charlottesville)
  • William B. Edge, Discovery Channel
  • Mark A. Hagedorn, Barnes & Thornburg (Chicago)
  • Jeffrey K. Riffer,  Elkins Kalt (Los Angeles)
  • Pete R. Yonkman, Cook Medical (Bloomington)
  • Hongsun Yoon, Barnes & Thornburg (Indianapolis)

Cook Medical Part Time Position

Cook Medical Part-Time Patent Position
Cook wishes to hire up to a total of four 2L or 3L IU law students on a part-time basis (paid) for a couple of major patent law projects this semester here in Bloomington.  The attached information provides relevant information about one of the projects;  the other project is similar.  Please submit resumes immediately (following the instructions in the details below)– Cook would like to have people in place by the beginning of October.

POSITION DETAILS:
A part time work project (15 hours per week for each of two people) is available to identify which patents of Cook’s patent portfolio may be infringed by the products of a selected competitor of Cook’s Peripheral Intervention Strategic Business Unit.   The project would also examine what, if any, impact the patents of the selected competitor may have on Cook products.
Published literature would be examined under the supervision of a Cook marketing mentor to identify the products of the selected competitor.  The products of the identified competitor would then be studied under the supervision of a Cook patent attorney mentor to determine which, if any, claims of Cook’s patent portfolio were potentially infringed by the competitor’s products. A first report would be prepared to detail the findings of this competitor product study.  The potentially infringing competitor products would then be sent to outside patent counsel for further analysis.
A study of the competitor’s patent portfolio would be performed, again under the supervision of the two mentors, to identify any of the competitor’s patents that may impact Cook’s products.  A second report would be prepared to detail the findings of this competitor patent portfolio study.
The identified, potentially infringing competitor products and the impact of each competitor’s patent portfolio on Cook’s products would be examined by Cook’s Peripheral Intervention Strategic Business Unit to formulate a business strategy that could be implemented with the selected competitor.
It is projected that the products and patents of the selected competitor of the Peripheral Intervention Strategic Business Unit could be studied in a 13 week part time work project under the supervision of the two Cook mentors.  The two reports and at least one PowerPoint presentation for the business unit at the conclusion of the two studies would be required for the project.   Candidates for the part time work project would include JD-MBA students or JD students with a business background.  A background in the life sciences or engineering would be a plus.
To apply, please email a resume and cover letter to Katie Zerr in the Human Resources department at katie.zerr@cookmedical.com.
